Latin American Film Festival: Ballroom / Chega de Saudade
Though it's not yet 5 p.m., the elegantly dressed throng of ladies and gentlemen already fills one of Sao Paulo's most popular ballrooms. Few in this stylish crowd will see fifty again, but that doesn't stop them from flirting, fantasizing, and of course showing off some smooth moves on the dance floor.
Here in the ballroom, love and life unfolds to the strains of a seductive samba or a spirited bolero. Director Laís Bodanzky's finely acted ensemble film introduces us to a cast of characters that includes Álvaro, a grumpy old man mourning his lost vigor, and his longtime mistress Dona Alice, still vivacious but now forgetful; the incorrigible flirt Eudes and his beautiful, spurned girlfriend; Marici, the fresh young thing who has reluctantly tagged along with her jealous boyfriend the sound man, and is then swept off her feet by Eudes; and a lone fat guy who is so sweaty that no woman will dance with him.
Featuring a fabulous soundtrack with performances by singers Elza Soares and Marku Ribas, the film won the Audience and Best Director awards at the Brasilia Film Festival.
