We were going through this year's lineup and realized how many of this year's narratives and docs were about sports or were sports related. We've got closing night Rudo y Cursi that revolves around football--or soccer if you want to go against the other 5 billion people in the world--and Faded Glory that's about baseball. What about the folks behind the scenes? Anyone that's been to a baseball game early enough to get autographs and watch batting practice knows the grounds folks are constantly working right up till game time. So here's 5 Questions with Scott Balzer:
Scott Balzer - Director "The Farm Team" Short Doc
1) What motivated you to make this film?
I just wanted to make a film about people who often get overlooked but are doing something interesting with their lives. I was a groundskeeper in minor league baseball for seven years who ended up getting into filmmaking. And this may sound cliche, but by making this film it felt like a sense of paying tribute to what it was I did back then to get to where I am today.
2) What's the one thing about your film you're most proud of?
The one thing Im most proud of my film is that a year ago this whole thing was simply an idea in my head that has become a physical viewable thing audiences can hopefully learn from and also be entertained by.
3) Someone has to go to the bathroom during your film, and they have to miss part of your film. Do they miss the beginning, the middle or the end?
I'd say don't miss any because its only 15 minutes long. You can hold it.
4) Who are the directors, filmmakers or artists that most influenced you or your film?
I would have to say I was influenced for this film by AJ Schnack and his film "Kurt Cobain: About a Son", Errol Morris' "Gates of Heaven" and the TV show Friday Night Lights. Im also a big Kubrick and PT Anderson fan.
10) Who is the unsung hero of your film and why?
The unsung hero of my film would have to be my composer Ben Holst. He has worked with me on a few short films before and after this film and has continued to deliver great original music time and again. This film has a lot of great stuff performed by Ben that I feel helps to the overall enjoyment of watching and listening to his score for The Farm Team.
