2009 ATLANTA FILM FESTIVAL JURY NARRATIVE FEATURE MOLLY HASKELL Molly Haskell, author and critic, was a long-time staff writer for The Village Voice, New York Magazine and Vogue. She has written for many publications, including The New York Times, Esquire, The Nation, Town & Country, The Guardian UK, The New York Observer and The New York Review of Books. She has served as Artistic Director of the Sarasota French Film Festival, on the selection committee of the New York Film Festival, as Associate Professor of Film at Barnard and as Adjunct Professor of Film at Columbia University. In 2005-2006, she was a host on Turner Classic Movies’ “Essentials.” Her books include From Reverence to Rape: the Treatment of Women in the Movies (1973; revised and reissued in 1989); a memoir, Love and Other Infectious Diseases (1990); and, in 1997, a collection of essays and interviews, Holding My Own in No Man's Land: Women and Men and Films and Feminists. Her newest book, Frankly, My Dear: Gone with the Wind Revisited, will be published by Yale University Press in the Spring of 2009. LANRE OLABISI Lanre Olabisi is an emerging young director and screenwriter who has been lauded in Variety, Filmmaker Magazine, and Indiewire for his first feature film, August the First. His recognitions include a Gotham Award Nomination, a Best Feature Film win at the San Francisco Black Film Festival, the top prize at the Milwaukee Film Festival, an Audience Award at the UrbanWorld Film Festival, and a Best First Feature Film win at the Sidewalk Film Festival. Mr. Olabisi's film played at 30 international film festivals, and screened at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and aired on PBS. MICHAEL SRAGOW Michael Sragow, author of Victor Fleming: An American Movie Master, is the movie critic for the Baltimore Sun and contributes regularly to The New Yorker. He has also written for Salon, The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone, among many publications. He edited the Library of America’s two volumes of James Agee’s work, as well as Produced and Abandoned: The National Society of Film Critics Write on the Best Films You’ve Never Seen. He lives with his wife, Glenda Hobbs, in Baltimore. DOCUMENTARY FEATURE KAIRA AKITA An Atlanta-based actress, Kaira Akita, is best known for her comedic work as the character, "Diva", on BET's critically acclaimed original series Somebodies and for memorable supporting roles in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and The Family That Preys. Other credits include HBO's Little Britain USA, House of Payne, Meet the Browns, Road Trip 2, One Missed Call, and 3:16: Stories of Hope. PETER GILBERT Peter Gilbert is one of the filmmakers who made Hoop Dreams, serving as a Producer and Director of Photography. The film won numerous awards including The Sundance Film Festival Audience Award, Producers Guild of America, Independent Spirit Award, and The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Journalism. Mr. Gilbert has had a distinguished career in producing, directing, and photographing documentaries, feature films, commercials, and music videos. Gilbert’s commercial work includes award-winning spots for Budweiser, Ford, Major League Baseball, MasterCard, Honda, ESPN, NBA, and the Truth campaigns. With All Deliberate Speed, the first work in the new series “Discovery Docs,” for the Discovery Network, was nominated for a Prime Time Emmy for Distinguished Work in Non-Fiction Film. He is a director with Workhorse Media, in Los Angeles and New York; and a Board Member of Kartemquin Films, in Chicago. With Kartemquin Films and Steve James, Petere recently finished At The Death House Door, which premiered at South by Southwest in 2008, and won awards at several other festivals following, including the inspiration award at Full Frame. It aired on the Independent Film Channel in May of 2008. STEVE MONTAL Steve Montal is the co-founder and CEO of Caucho Technology, a global leader in Java Software. Montal has worked with over 85 film festivals serving as a board member, programmer, jury and seminar organizer/moderator. Montal worked with the American Film Institute, where he launched the Silverdocs Film Festival. His producing credits include Viva Terra Viva, a television concert event for UNICEF that was broadcast to over 100 countries and seen by 500 million people for the benefit of the Amazon. Montal is on the faculty of San Diego State University and lectures throughout the world at film festivals and conferences. SHORTS KURT KUENNE Kurt Kuenne is an award-winning filmmaker and composer of both fiction and documentary films and a recipient of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting. His work as a writer/director/composer includes the teen drama Scrapbook (1999) starring Eric Balfour, the PBS documentary Drive-In Movie Memories (2001), and a popular series of black & white short film comedies: Rent-A-Person (Winner - Best Narrative Short, AFF 2004), Validation (2006), Slow (2007) and The Phone Book (2008), all of which played the Atlanta Film Festival. Recently, his feature documentary, Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father, made numerous critics' lists of the 10 Best Films of 2008, and among other year-end honors was named one of the Top 5 Documentaries of 2008 by the National Board of Review. The film was released in theaters and on DVD by Oscilloscope Laboratories, and is currently in rotation on MSNBC. MELISSA PALMER Producer/Director, Melissa Palmer, was raised in Memphis, TN, and moved to North Carolina to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina School of the Arts. She has produced several independent features. Her most recent project, Great World of Soun,d premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and at the MoMA/Film Society of Lincoln Center's New Directors/New Films Series. In 2007, it won the top Jury Award "Best Dramatic Feature" at the Atlanta Film Festival. Melissa is currently directing a feature length documentary, Dartagnan Is The Champion, which is now in post-production. Palmer’s second career is playing the character of Marzipan in the web-toon Homestar Runner. HEIDI VAN LIER Heidi Van Lier is an indie filmmaker living in Los Angeles. She has made 3 feature films; Chi Girl, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival; Monday, which screened as a special screening at the Slamdance Film Festival, and American Decaf, which will make the festival rounds in 2009. Heidi now programs for the Slamdance Film Festival, produces and directs Slamdance TV (Slamdance.com) during the festival, and continues to counsel 10-15 filmmakers about festival strategy throughout the year. PINK PEACH KATHERINE BROOKS Katherine Brooks ran away from her small town home in Louisiana to pursue a career in television and film when she was just 16. With only $150, Katherine first slept in her car in the parking lot of a Hollywood motel. Now, a decade later, Katherine has directed some of television's hottest shows and will begin shooting her third feature film, The Boys Club, in the fall of 2009. Katherine's first feature film, Loving Annabelle, made its premier at the prestigious Cinequest Film Festival and won both the Audience Award and Best Actress Award at Outfest. The film is currently the number one selling film of its genre. She recently finished her latest film, Waking Madison, which will be released in the fall of 2009 and stars Elisabeth Shue and Sarah Roemer. JIM FARMER Jim Farmer is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in telecommunications. Besides serving as a freelance writer for area and national publications (including Southern Voice), he worked for Landmark Theatres as the marketing manager of the Midtown Art Cinema from 2004-2005. Since then, he has worked as an independent publicist on films such as The Squid and the Whale, No End in Sight, Mysterious Skin, Trouble the Water and the current American Violet. Jim also serves as the festival director of Out On Film, Atlanta’s gay and lesbian film festival. A self-acknowledged movie geek, he lives in Avondale Estates with his partner Craig. LAUREN WOLKSTEIN Lauren Wolkstein is a filmmaker born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She received the Undergraduate Filmmaker Award at Duke University. She has since written and directed numerous short films while attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and, presently is finishing her MFA in Film directing at Columbia University’s School Of The Arts. , She has received several awards for her films such as the 2007 Lifetime Movie Network Student Filmmaker Award for her short film, We Three. She also received the Audience Award for Best Short Film at Atlanta’s Out On Film LGBT Festival for her film, Dandelion Fall, as well as Best Short at the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and the After Hours Film Society Festival in Chicago. Dandelion Fall is being distributed by Wolfe Releasing in a 3-shorts compilation DVD called She Likes Girls. Lauren currently teaches filmmaking and directing to undergraduates at Columbia University, is writing two feature films and finishing post-production of her latest short film, Cigarette Candy.
