Disabled but able to ROCK! Benefit will raise awareness of autism and help fund ATL film ATLANTA – Danger Woman's Superhero Showdown, a benefit to raise autism awareness and completion funds for the documentary film, “Disabled but Able to Rock”,will take place in Atlanta on April 30, 2009 at Vinyl. The documentary by Blake Myers follows autistic performance artist and disabled rights activist, Betsy Goodrich, AKA Danger Woman.
Goodrich grew up in Atlanta as an outsider before finding an outlet dressing as Danger Woman for the city’s annual fantasy festival, Dragon Con. The film delves beneath the superficiality of her disability and examines a woman struggling between her idealized fantasy life and the world of the "Normals."
“What began 12 years ago as the chronicle of an entertaining street character has turned into the study of an autistic adult trying to make her own way in the world,” director Blake Myers said. “Using home movies, interviews, old photographs and performance footage, I hope to cast a spotlight on a person whose exuberance continues to inspire me.” The Superhero Showdown will feature performances from Atlanta bands, The Selmanaires and The Falcon Lords, with appearances by members of Blast off Burlesque. A celebrity panel, led by Rock 100's The Regular Guys, will determine the night’s best costume and award a grand prize – attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero.
Danger Woman and her Danger Force Band will perform following a 10 minute trailer of “Disabled but Able to Rock”, and professional costume models and Atlanta acting staples Chris and Miracole Burns will serve as the evening’s masters of ceremony.
Tickets for the 18+ show are $10; all proceeds will go directly to the completion of the film. Charitable donations to the project above the $10 entry are tax-deductible. Contributions can also be made online at http://fiscalsponsorship.ifp.
"Autism is a very misunderstood disorder,” Myers said. “As Danger Woman, Betsy was accepted into a subculture where she received respect and ultimately thrived. Her story deserves to be told - I'm just happy she let me do it." XXXX Director Blake Myers is a member of the Atlanta film group Big Party High 5. “Disabled but Able to Rock” is officially sponsored by the Independent Feature Project.
