Pivot partners with ATLFF to present full documentary lineup
The 2014 Atlanta Film Festival proudly announces the addition of special presentations from Pivot, Participant Media’s new cable network targeting millennials. Pivot, which launched in 2013 to over 40 million subscribers, is sponsoring the festival’s entire documentary lineup and will showcase documentary features "The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" and "Cesar’s Last Fast" during the upcoming 38th Atlanta Film Festival. "The Internet’s Own Boy" tells the story of programming prodigy, information activist and founder of Reddit, Aaron Swartz. A vivid picture is painted as this feature documents Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two year legal nightmare until taking his own life at the age of twenty-six. "Cesar’s Last Fast" documents the last act of protest in the labor leader’s remarkable life, and includes never-before-seen footage of Chavez during his fast and testimony from those closest to him.
"The Internet’s Own Boy," a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties, marks the latest feature by director Brian Knappenberger ("We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists"). "Cesar’s Last Fast" is the work of the late Lorena Parlee, a trade unionist and former press secretary for Cesar Chavez himself, and Richard Ray Perez, an avid producer of civil and environmental rights documentaries. Pivot’s goal of illuminating issues through engaging content in an effort to continue the conversation, connect audiences and encourage action is evident through this rich lineup of "The Internet’s Own Boy" and "Cesar’s Last Fast" offered at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival.
“Forging a partnership with Pivot greatly contributes to the goals of the Atlanta Film Festival. As much as our objective is to foster cultural and creative discovery among our entire audience, we’re equally passionate about sparking conversation and inspiring change among our younger festival goers. The addition of Pivot’s programming does just that – it tackles the hard issues and raises awareness of technological and cultural challenges, both past and present,” said Kristy Breneman, Atlanta Film Festival Programmer – Features and Special Programs.
"The Internet’s Own Boy" will play at the Atlanta Film Festival on Sunday, March 30 at 7:00pm at The Plaza Theatre. "Cesar’s Last Fast" will play at the festival on Monday, March 31 at 7:00pm at The Plaza Theatre. Both of these special programs are free, but RSVPs are encouraged for guaranteed seating.
