Presented by the Atlanta Film Festival, New Mavericks is a year-round program to support women involved in various aspects of the Atlanta film community in achieving a strong voice in the local industry. Expanded from the festival’s acclaimed female-directed shorts block, New Mavericks meets on the third Wednesday of the month and provides networking opportunities, educational programs, opportunities for professional development, and more.

12:00 PM - CHILDREN'S ANIMATION WORKSHOP & SCREENING - $5
Join Synchronicity and the Atlanta Film Festival in partnership with Atlanta's animation society ASIFA-ATLANTA and My Animation Life LLC. for a fun filled basic animation workshop suitable for all ages led by Marisa Tontaveetong. Learn a brief history of Lotte Reineiger, pioneer of silhouette animation who animated the first full-length feature animation and create short animated sequence with found objects prepared through the art of stop motion.
2:30 PM - THE HERSTORY OF THE FEMALE FILMMAKER - FREE
Short films produced by some of cinema's earliest (female) pioneers that were left out of our film history textbooks. Animator and filmmaker extraordinaire, Kelly Gallagher, will be in attendance to not only screen her film but to provide historical context.

8:00 PM - Closing Night Film: I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS directed by Leah Meyerhoff - $10
"I Believe in Unicorns" takes us on a road trip through the stunning and complex landscape of troubled young love. Davina (Natalia Dyer) is an imaginative and strong-willed teenage girl who often escapes into a beautifully twisted fantasy life. Having grown up quickly as the sole caretaker of her disabled mother (Toni Meyerhoff), she looks for salvation in a new relationship with an older boy (Peter Vack). Davina is swept into a whirlwind of romance and adventure, but the enchantment of her new relationship quickly fades when his volatile side begins to emerge.
"I Believe in Unicorns" premiered at SXSW, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Atlanta Film Festival, Best Score at the Nashville Film Festival, Best Cinematography at First Time Fest, and additional awards from The Woodstock Film Festival, Anchorage Film Festival, San Francisco Film Society, IFP, Tribeca Film Institute and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation.
