IN PURSUIT OF SILENCE - Encore

Sunday, April 10, 2016, 2:45 PM — 7 Stages Theatre

As much a work of devotion as it is a documentary, “In Pursuit of Silence” is a meditative exploration of our relationship with silence and the impact of noise on our lives. In our race towards modernity, amidst all the technological innovation and the rapid growth of our cities, silence is now quickly passing into legend. From causing aggressive behavior to hundreds of thousands of heart attacks around the world, there is no aspect of human life that noise does not infringe upon. Silence as a resource for respite and renewal from the sensory onslaught of our modern lives is now more important than ever before.

THE ARBALEST - Encore

Sunday, April 10, 2016, 7:45 PM — Plaza Theatre, Upstairs

"The Arbalest" is a confessional recount of the reclusive private life of Foster Kalt, the world-renowned inventor of the Kalt Cube. #FestivalCollective Filmmaker Spotlight: Jack Fields, "Happy Memories"

Meet Jack Fields, the eccentric filmmaker behind the puppetry short film "Happy Memories," one of the featured selections on the Film Festival Collective OnDemand channel presented by XFINITY.

Filmmaker Jack Fields's unique, puppetry-influenced filmmaking style is as fascinating as it is eccentric. His debut film, "Happy Memories," follows a cupcake on its journey through a dangerous realm. Psychedelic, intricate, and eye-catching; "Happy Memories" takes the viewer on a wonderfully outlandish trip that surely inspires the imagination. The film played in over 15 film festivals, including as an official selection of the 2014 Indie Grits Festival.

Jack Fields has been creating puppetry since 2007. His success with this medium is readily apparent as shown through his accumulation of two United Arts of Central Florida grants, both for the creation of his puppet films (including "Happy Memories"). Fields has earned other accolades as well, including the PuppetFest Midwest scholarship and the UNIMA scholarship.

Fields is currently based in Orlando, Florida where he works at There's a Thing in There, a puppetry production company. There, Fields creates projects with fellow puppeteer-filmmakers Hannah Millers and John Regan. The company specializes in non-traditional storytelling through narratives inspired by both mythology and the subconscious.

What's next for this unconventional filmmaker? Fields is currently in the works on a new film about Albert Einstein's brain building a body out of discarded corpses and going on a journey of self discovery. But for now, watch Fields's trailer for "Happy Memories" below and check out his website for more outstanding works.

The program features short films and other quality content from ten film festivals across the markets that Comcast serves. The effort now spans 13 states and is available to over 9 million Comcast customer households.

“Since May, we’ve worked to bring the best content to Comcast customers around the Southeastern United States,” said ATLFF Executive Director Christopher Escobar. “This expansion provides us with the opportunity to reach audiences outside of the region and to bring artistic voices from new festivals into the Collective.”

Films from previous festivals in the Collective stretch across genre lines that include animation, comedy, documentary, drama, horror, sci-fi, music videos and beyond.

The Film Festival Collective has grown to include ten festival members: the Atlanta Film Festival, The Nashville Film Festival, the Charleston International Film Festival, the Atlanta-based documentary series Homespun, the Knoxville Film Festival, the Macon Film Festival, Indie Memphis, Atlanta’s Out on Film, and the Indie Grits Film Festival. Additional festivals from the newly expanded area will be included in the coming weeks. #FestivalCollective Spotlight On: ATLFF 2012's “Pisces of an Unconscious Mind”

Take a look at the Atlanta Film Festival 2012 official selection, "Pisces of an Unconscious Mind," ready to watch now on Film Festival Collective. Director Gleb Osatinski is currently crowdfunding his next film to be shot in Atlanta.

Director Gleb Osatinski’s experimental short film Pisces of an Unconscious Mind explores the psychological struggle to resolve the monotony of reality with the obscurity of unreality. Osatinski acknowledges that the film is based loosely on his own life, and in fact attributes the original script to a dream he once had.

Pisces of an Unconscious Mind represents Osatinski’s debut as a filmmaker; before following his lifelong passion for film and storytelling, he lead a 16-year career on Wall Street in New York City. Originally from Kharkov, Ukraine, Osatinski immigrated to the United States in 1994 following the fall of the Soviet Union. While living in Russia, he graduated with a Master’s in Physics.

While the fantasy of movies and cartoons captivated Osatinski from early childhood, he points to his background in Physics as the foundation for his understanding of successful filmmaking techniques. Perhaps within this personal intersection of the scientific world and the creative one lies the crux of Pisces of an Unconscious Mind as a reflection of Osatinski’s own internal struggles.

Excitingly, Osatinski’s next film will be shot right here in Atlanta. A Sci-Fi short written by a collaboration of scientists and filmmakers, The Quantified Self will tell the story of a family that relies on technology in order to optimize their health and success, complicating their relationships with one-another. Imoto Harney, one of the ATLFF’s own event photographers, is the film’s producer. You can find out more and help support the project on its Kickstarter page.

You can now watch Pisces of an Unconscious Mind on Film Festival Collective presented by Xfinity.

#FestivalCollective Spotlight On: Charleston's "Place Stamp Here"

Place Stamp Here follows a girl and her dog as they travel together while being disassembled along their way, and collecting pieces to reassemble themselves. Available to watch now on the Film Festival Collective VOD channel.

Place Stamp Here by Kelly Sharp.

#FestivalCollective Spotlights are reposted from the Film Festival Collective blog. Xfinity subscribers can watch films in the Collective for free as part of their regular subscription. Learn more about how to watch the Collective films here.

Place Stamp Here follows a girl and her dog as they travel together while being disassembled along their way, and collecting pieces to reassemble themselves. They don't quite end up as they started, similarly to how the world doesn't either.

Sparked from the mind of Kelly Sharp, while looking for more exciting projects to work on—"My favorite part of my job is that my chair swivels, so I need pursue other, more lovely projects."

A lovely project indeed, Sharp worked with animators Joy Vaccese and Noelle Melody to make this story.

Vaccese and Melody are illustrators and animators who, coincidentally also are twin sisters. Both graduating from the Pratt Institute went on to starting their own company, Twins Are Weird. Having several shorts under their belt, Place Stamp Here won Best Animation at our own Charleston International Film Festival and winner at the Sodak Animation Festival.

Place Stamp Here is now available to watch on Film Festival Collective presented by Xfinity.
