Read MoreIf you're at all connected to the filmmaking industry in the South -- or filmmaking in general -- you've probably already heard of "Slates for Sarah," a social media tribute to the late Sarah Elizabeth Jones. Jones, a Camera Assistant who lived in Atlanta, was in Savannah earlier this month working on the set of Midnight Rider when she was struck and killed by a train. Online recollections from her colleagues and friends in the South and around the world echo the remembrances sent to us here at the Festival from locals who knew her and worked with her.
Read MoreThe 38th Annual Atlanta Film Festival will open with "Joe," starring Nicolas Cage as an ex-con and unlikely role model who meets a 15-year-old boy (Tye Sheridan) and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin. Director David Gordon Green ("Pineapple Express," television's "Eastbound & Down") is scheduled to attend. Closing out this year’s fest is "The Double," a stylish black comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. Eisenberg plays Simon James, a timid man living an isolated existence in an indifferent world until his exact physical double and opposite personality arrives in the form of new co-worker, James Simon. "The Double" is directed by cult favorite Richard Ayoade ("Submarine," television’s “The IT Crowd").

Co-writer/director Mark Potts sends this video reminiscence of his time at the Atlanta Film Festival and what we're pretty sure is a description of a detour he took to the Clermont Lounge.

Read MoreAfter more than seven years of service to the Atlanta Film Festival, Artistic Director Charles Judson has left to pursue other opportunities.
"The past seven years have been an amazing time of change for both the film industry and for the Atlanta Film Festival, and I feel honored to have been a part of that change," said Judson. "Now it's time for a change of my own direction in the industry and in the direction of the Festival."
Executive Director Christopher Escobar has delegated Judson's duties among the current staff, and Judson will consult with staff during the transition and lead-up to this year's annual event (March 28 - April 6). There are no current plans to place a successor to Judson.
"Charles has made valuable contributions to the organization that will be felt for years to come," said Escobar. "We wish him the best and we're looking forward to a great 2014 festival."
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are forced to push our screenplay competition back just one more week.
Read MoreAs Artistic Director, I want to personally apologize for the delay in sending this update to everyone that submitted to the 2014 Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition. The first few weeks of January are a busy time as we're working on festival programming, festival operations, starting new interns, bringing on seasonal staff for the festival, as well as working on year-round events.
Due to the recent extreme cold, our offices on Georgia State University's campus were closed January 6 and January 7. Meetings and phone calls planned for January 4 and January 5 related to film and screenplay competition submissions (including receiving and reviewing updated judges scores) were also cancelled.
Accordingly, it took a few days to realign multiple project timelines and staff schedules. Below are the new announcement dates for the 2014 ATLFF Screenplay Competition.
REVISED 2014 ATLFF SCREENPLAY ANNOUNCEMENT DATES
January 23 - Announce 12 to 15 Screenplay Competition Finalists
January 27 and January 28 - Screenplay Finalists Interviews
January 31 - Announce 3 Winners Participating in Screenplay Retreat
We would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. New dates are reflected on the ATLFF Screenplay Competition page and we emailed all submitters with the new dates the afternoon of January 9.
Charles Judson
