Apply to join the Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Reading Committee

The Atlanta Film Festival is currently seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable film lovers and screenwriters to join our volunteer Screenplay Reading Committees.

Screenplay readers read and evaluate submissions, providing notes and recommendations for programmers to review during the programming process. Each year ATLFF must narrow down over 2,500 screenplay submissions to 5 winning screenplays. The work of our reading committee is invaluable to this process.

Volunteering on the committee is an excellent way to gain experience in independent filmmaking and screenwriting as well as valuable insight into the film festival world as a whole. There’s no better way to learn the ins and outs of the filmmaking art form than to critically evaluate completed screenplays.

In addition to valuable experience, screeners and readers can also earn badges to the 2025 Atlanta Film Festival based on how many screenplays they read (a reward value up to $500).

Screenplay Reader duties include:

  • Reading feature and pilot screenplays from start to finish

  • Scoring screenplays on a numerical scale of screenwriting elements

  • Writing a brief set of notes on each screenplay, including what elements were successful, which were unsuccessful, and whether or not you recommend that it advances in the competition.

Volunteer readers are selected via an application process and participation on the reading committee is by invitation only. Space on the committee is limited and is filled at the discretion of ATLFF to ensure a qualified committee.

(Screenwriters who plan to submit to the 2025 Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition may not serve on the committee for the category they will submit to. Please see the applications for more information.)
